Competition for the best media work on the European integration

Delevic, Lloveras, Brbaklic

The Delegation of the European Commission to Serbia, Serbian European Integration Office and Erste Bank have launched a competition for the best media work addressing the European integration process in Serbia published this year between 1 January and 1 November. The prizes will be awarded in five categories: television report, radio report, newspaper report, a report published in the local media and a report on small and medium enterprises.

Director of the Serbian European Integration Office Milica Delevic expects that the European integration-related topics will get greater media coverage this year than the previous years, when these topics were, as she puts it, in the shadow of big political issues. She has pointed out that the reports should address European integration, Stabilisation and Association Process and, primarily, their influence on the everyday life. According to Ms Delevic, the European integration process loses its significance if Serbian citizens do not understand why it is good to be part of the European Union (EU) and this is why the media are so important.
Emphasising the importance of the media in the EU integration process, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Serbia Ambassador Josep Lloveras said that the European Commission’s progress report on Serbia’s advance towards Europe, which was to be published in mid-October, could be an inspiration for journalists as it was going to be a comprehensive report on how the EU viewed Serbia’s progress in the integration process.

He announced that the European Commission was going to allocate 3.3 million euros from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance for 2008 for media projects in the area of European integration.

Director of the Communications Department at Erste Bank Andrea Brbaklic expects a great number of quality reports that will move the importance of the European integration from the daily political context and address its positive effects on the life-style of Serbian citizens. She believes that the involvement of the bank in such a project is a natural partnership and sees Serbia’s accession to the Union primarily as a good business deal for Serbia.

The best reports will be announced in late November by the competition jury consisting of the representatives of the Delegation of the European Commission to Serbia, Serbian European Integration Office, Erste Bank and journalists.

At the end of the year, the winners will travel to Brussels and visit the European Commission and European Parliament. Erste Bank will award the winners in all five categories with 35.000 dinars each.
